THE METHOD
Most of the time you spend reading is not spent taking words in. Your eyes hop from word to word about four times a second, and every hop costs a little time to aim and land. Often they hop backwards, re-reading something they already passed.
Saccade holds your eyes still and moves the text instead. One word appears at a time, always in the same spot, so there is nothing to aim at. Psychologists call this rapid serial visual presentation, and it has been studied since the 1970s.
The red letter is what makes it comfortable. You recognise a word fastest when your eye lands just left of its centre, so every word is positioned to put that letter in exactly the same place. Sentence ends and long words earn a slightly longer pause, which is how comprehension survives the pace.
